septic-tank-and-house-guests (1)In the middle of weight loss, financial and health resolutions – your septic system is probably the last thing on your mind. But considering the large investment you have in your home and your septic system, a resolution surrounding your system is the perfect way to kick off 2017. Maintaining your septic system means that your system can run efficiently, you’ll experience less backups and it’s better for the the environment.

Here are just a few septic system resolutions that will help you kick off 2017:

  1. Understand your pumpout schedule.
When was the last time you had your system pumped out? Septic systems should be pumped and inspected every 3 to 5 years. This helps you avoid drainfield failure, backups, and other septic system issues. It also helps you avoid costly repair expenses and groundwater contamination.
  2. Get smart about water use.
Not pumping your septic system regularly isn’t the only thing that can cause backups. Efficient water use for septic system owners is critical. Not only is conscious water use better for the environment, but it also helps your system process wastewater slowly and avoids overloading your system with a full tank. Manage your water use carefully. Space out laundry throughout the week and try not to run showers, dishwashers and washing machines at the same time.
  3. Be careful what you flush.
While your septic system is equipped with a filter, avoiding items on the “do not flush” list will help avoid issues in between pumpouts. Items like feminine products, diapers, “flushable wipes” (which are not actually flushable) and certain types of toilet paper should be avoided. Here’s a blog that will help you identify which items are safe to flush and which are not safe to flush: http://www.crewsenvironmental.com/septic-maintenance-101-things-you-shouldnt-be-flushing/
  4. Educate those around you about your septic system resolutions.
Making plans to change the way you do things is a great start, but you should also make sure your guests and anyone living in your household is on the same page. If those in your home have a good understanding of water use and flushable products, you can more effectively manage the maintenance of your septic system.

2017 is a year to manage things more effectively, and while most are starting with themselves, septic system owners should make sure to also make resolutions for their system to help manage it effectively in 2017.

If you are unsure when your system was last inspected or are experiencing issues with your system, please contact the experts at Crews Environmental to help you get up to speed on the state of your septic system.
