With football season in full swing, many homeowners are hosting football parties for their favorite teams, bringing in a slough of guests and delicious tailgate food. When it comes to hosting football parties and cooking for a large group of people, it’s important to consider your septic system carefully. There are a few factors that come into play with maintaining your plumbing and septic systems in Fort Myers.

Here are a few useful tips to keep in mind while you’re preparing for and cleaning up after your football gatherings:

Don’t dump oil or grease.

It’s important that no matter which oils you choose to cook with, that you responsibly dispose of your cooking fats and used oil when you are done cooking. If you pour oil down your drains, once the oil cools it has the potential to clog drainpipes and go into your septic system – which can cause damage to your drainfield or the system itself.

Consider composting or throwing waste away.

With all the delicious food surrounding them, guests tend to overfill plates, resulting in lots of wasted food that will inevitably make its way to the trash. Be sure that if you have a septic system, you are not putting food solids down your drain. Even with a garbage disposal, it is important to minimize the amount of solids that go into the disposal, as septic systems are not designed to break down solids.

By keeping oils and solid food out of your drainpipes, you will give your septic system the best opportunity to work effectively for the onslaught of party guests.

Happy Football Season from the Crews Environmental team!
