Septic Inspection

Here is the process we follow:

  Locate the System

If a sketch is not already provided to locate the system, our technician/driver will use a probe to locate the septic tank. Once the tank is located, the lid(s) will be uncovered and removed. When this is done, an initial visual inspection will be done prior to pumping the tank. Notes regarding the condition and characteristics of the tank will be made.

  Pump Out Septic Tank

Our technician/driver will pump out the septic tank. If it is a chambered tank, both sides will be pumped out. The technician/driver will make further notes regarding the condition of the tank and any of the components housed inside the tank, including baffles, tees, effluent filters/screens, and the inlet and outlet pipes.

Check Septic Tank for a Watertight Seal

The primary function of the septic tank is to allow settlement of solids from the home. The most important issue with any tank is a watertight seal. This is important for two reasons:

  1. Wastewater must be contained inside the tank to keep it from contaminating groundwater.
  2. Rain and/or groundwater must be kept out of the tank so as not to overfill the tank.

Examine the Septic Tank Drain Field

Once the septic tank is pumped, the technician/driver will begin inspecting the drain field. The primary function of the drain field is to provide treatment to the effluent that leaves the tank. The drain field is usually made up of rock and pipe or chambers, and soil. The effluent is treated by passing through the rock or chambers and then once again treated as it moves through the soil. During an inspection of your drain field, the technician/driver is looking for any water surfacing on top of or along the sides of the drain field area, any smell coming from the drain field area, saturation of the drain field, and/or any obstructions (trees, roots, shrubs, tire ruts). Any of them may present an issue with the proper functioning of the system.

Confirm Each Component Is In Good Working Condition

The goal of an inspection is to determine that each component of the septic system is in good working condition, and that the system is doing the job it was intended to do. If any part of the system is not functioning accordingly, recommendations will be made regarding repair and/or replacement.
